Route overview
The journey runs south to north, crossing Finland's diverse landscapes over 7–10 days. You begin with two nights in Helsinki to settle in, then move to the medieval coast, the industrial lakes, the university belt and the Saimaa lake region before heading above the Arctic Circle. The final stretch covers Oulu and finishes in Rovaniemi, Lapland. Two to three nights in Lapland gives the best chance of clear skies for the northern lights. Helsinki and the medieval coast
Helsinki Cathedral rises gleaming white above Senate Square, its emerald domes and neoclassical columns visible from far across the city. Climb the famous steps for sweeping views of the old town. The climb is short but the steps can be steep and icy in winter, so wear shoes with grip. A short drive brings you to Porvoo Old Town, where ochre-red warehouses mirror in the river and cobblestones wind between centuries-old houses. Porvoo is one of Finland's oldest towns, with cosy cafés and artisan boutiques in the lanes.
Tampere's lakes and sacred art
Tampere Cathedral is built from rugged granite in the National Romantic style. Inside, Hugo Simberg's frescoes The Wounded Angel and The Garden of Death hang above the pews while a serpent winds across the vault, making this Finland's most spellbinding sacred art. A short walk uphill takes you to the Pyynikki Observation Tower on the world's largest gravel ridge. The tower gives 360° views over Tampere's lakes and forests; the stairs inside are narrow and winding. Jyväskylä and the Lakeland heart
Jyväskylä is the heart of the Finnish Lakeland and the world's Alvar Aalto capital, holding more of the master's buildings than anywhere on earth. This lively university city mixes lakeside strolls, modernist icons and authentic saunas. The Alvar Aalto Museum, completed in 1973 above Lake Jyväsjärvi, is a white modernist manifesto. Inside, furniture, glassware and drawings unfold Aalto's work and life; the building now forms part of the Aalto2 Museum Centre. Walks between the buildings are flat and easy in summer, but lakeside paths can be icy in winter.
Kuopio, Oulu and the Arctic gate
In Kuopio, locals call the market square the navel of the world. Fried vendace, berry stalls and Savonian charm fill the air, and the 1902 Art Nouveau Market Hall shelters warm kalakukko. Puijo Tower above the city gives a 360° panorama of the Lakeland's island maze, with a revolving restaurant completing one full rotation per hour. In Oulu, the neoclassical cathedral, first built in 1777 and rebuilt to Carl Ludvig Engel's designs, shelters a bright, peaceful nave. Outside, Toripolliisi, the 2.2-metre bronze market square policeman, has kept watch since 1987. The 172-metre glass Arktikum in Rovaniemi explores auroras, Sámi culture and Lapland's history.
Santa Claus Village and Lapland's snow
Cross the glowing white line at 66°33′N that runs through Santa Claus Village, then hop into the Arctic Circle. You receive an official Arctic Circle Crossing Certificate to mark the step. Santa's official hometown sits right on the circle; you can meet Santa, post cards with the one-of-a-kind Arctic Circle postmark and make friends with reindeer and huskies. The indoor snow park in Rovaniemi stays open 365 days, with real snow, tubing and ice sculptures whatever the season. - Winter (December–March) brings guaranteed snow, short daylight and the strongest northern lights; summer offers endless light, open saunas and easy walking.
