Tourist Attractions
Koyasan is a sacred site of Shingon esoteric Buddhism, founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai 1,200 years ago. The entire Koyasan area is designated as "Honzan Kongobuji Temple," and in particular, Okunoin Temple and Danjo Temple are considered the two most sacred sites.
Shishiiwa (Lion Rock) is a world heritage, natural treasure and scenic spot. It is a peculiar rock that looks like a lion barking toward Kumano Beach. It is caused by ground uplifts and sea erosion.
Onigajo, a work of art created by nature through geological protrusion, erosion, and weathering, is a cliff that continues for 1 km along the Kumanonada Sea. It is designated as Japan's Scenic Spot and also Natural Monument. On top of the cliffs, there is a castle ruin dating back to the Age of Civil Wars, and a hiking path is made to connect Kumanokodo and Matsumoto-toge.
Hananoiwaya Shrine, which sits by Japan's longest beach in the Kumano region of Mie prefecture, is dedicated to a towering rock on that beach. The rock is 45 meters high, and has been shaped over eons by wind and waves. It is one of the oldest shrines in Japan.
Maruyama Senmaida, which was selected as one of Japan's top 100 rice terraces, is one of the largest terraced rice fields in Japan, boasting 1,340 rice terraces, and its scenery is said to be the best in Japan.
Hashiguiiwa Rocks are composed of about 40 pillar-shaped rocks, extending 850 meters from the coast to the ocean, resembling a bridge.
The "Doro-kyo" Valley is a 31-kilometer-long rugged ravine that rises above the turquoise waters of the Kitayama River. This natural trail, which looks like a different world, has become the unique beauty it is today after hundreds of years of strong erosion.
Nachi Falls has magnificent scenery and is the waterfall with the longest height difference in Japan. It is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range".
